Subject matter categories in combinatorial analysis
Aggregation of descriptors in the Northern News Service analysis yielded the following second-level categories: communications; culture; demographics; education; economics; energy; environment; extractive resources; exchange/visit; health; indigenous peoples; language; pollution; politics; renewable resources; science and technology; transportation; and wildlife.
General descriptions of subjects contained in the categories include:
* Communications: Includes publishing (books and newspapers) as well as electronic communications.
* Culture: Religion, spirituality, language, art, lifestyle, living patterns, habits.
* Demographics: Relating to demographic characteristics, e.g. age, gender, residence, housing, etc.
* Economics: Includes commerce as well as economics as a subject of study; development projects are included.
* Education: In addition to schols and school subjects, includes educational enterprises like museums.
* Energy: Fossil fuels, nuclear energy , renewable energy sources.
* Environment: Includes ecology, ecosystems; this will always include items labeled "pollution" but the reverse isn't necessarily true.
* Exchanges/visits: Travel between countries for non-tourism reasons. Includes "cooperation" as well as physical visits.
* Health and medicine: Modern or traditional.
* Indigenous peoples: Any activity in which indigenous people are involved.
* Language: Always a subset of culture, but specifically focused on language.
* Non-renewable resources: Mostly extractive industries. Includes mammoth ivory.
* Pollution: A subset of environment, but with specific reference to pollution and damage or potential damage.
* Politics and government: Any involvement of government agency. Politics, elections, etc. Also includes questions of political rights subject to government enforcement.
* Renewable resources: Includes tourism and hydroelectric and wind power as well as traditional natural resources like fisheries, timber, etc.
* Science and Technology: Includes all nuclear items.
* Transportation: Includes transportation system, transportation plans and transportation history.
* Wildlife: Includes commercially exploited wildlife (fisheries, fur trapping) as well as animals in the wild.
