Treatment classifications in combinatorial analysis<
News stories coded in this analysis were allocated to the following categories of treatment: news story; feature story; sports story; profile; history; commentary; and ofitsioz. General descriptions of these categories are:
* News story: A story primarily concerned with a time-specific, identifiable event, usually with an identifiable outcome. Typical subjects include politics, public meetings and gatherings, policy debates, economic projects.
* Feature story: Not primarily concerned with a time-specific, identifiable event. Typical subjects would include personalities, leisure activities, many cultural activities.
* Sports story: Deals with organized sports activity. Not general leisure, outdoors or recreation activities.
* Profile: Can be biography or a less encompassing personality profile. Usually involves a single subject.
* History: A story concerned more with events of more than 10 years ago than with current events.
* Commentary : Articles in which the expressed opinions of the writer are a prominent feature.
* Ofitsioz: Information about official events, texts of documents, draft agreements, decrees, announcements of government policy and the like. (From the Russian term for such materials; see McNair, op. cit.: 21).
