La Traviata
by Giuseppe Verdi
Sacramento Opera
17 November 1995
I was pleasantly surprised by my first Sacramento Opera performance: an altogether creditable production of La Traviata that did justice to almost all of Verdi's parade of hits in the opera. Olivia Gorra (Violetta) and Antonio Nagore (Alfredo) sang well and acted together nicely; it was interesting to see singers the right age for the roles, a rarity since more experienced singers usually get cast in these plum parts.
Gorra was steady and sang all the notes, a workmanlike if unspectacular coloratura that always got the job done. Her Act One finale was especially strong.
Nagore ducked some of the flourishes one grows to expect in Alfredo (the high note in "Croce e delizia," for instance) but he projected powerfully throughout.
Monroe Kanouse conducted at a pace that seemed a little rushed for my taste, but he got a solid performance and good sound out of the local orchestra.
