Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

The Voyage
by Philip Glass

Metropolitan Opera 11 April 1996
Metropolitan Opera House NYC

I can't recall much about the music from my first Philip Glass opera, which surprises me. I am a great admirer of his music on recordings -- certainly including the operas -- and loved my one earlier live performance, La Belle et la Bête. But I find my memories of this pleasant performance all center on the overall gestalt, while little intrinsic musicality remains. In all it was a manic, and otherworldly production, definitely centered on its space-man themes but not really coherent for me in total. I wish I had a chance to see it more than once, or that I had made these notes when the performance was fresher. I have a feeling there is a great deal more in this opera than I took away that night.
