Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

Die Fledermaus
by Johann Strauss

Anchorage Opera
Jan. 30, 1990 (Discovery Theater)

I didn't expect the Anchorage Opera production of Die Fledermaus to prosper in such close comparison with the show we'd just seen at the Met. I was pleasantly surprised.

The Anchorage production obviously offered nothing to match the pure vocal talent in New York, but did stage a highly enjoyable show that did not suffer greatly as an evening of entertainment. This might have been the one opera Anchorage would most liked to have compared with the Met this year.

One singer in particular was a standout: Karen Nickell in the Orlovsky trouser role was far superior to the Brenda Boozer interpetation in NY. Nickell gave the role great character with fine acting and her musky, haughty voice played very well in the role.

Hallie Neill (Rosalionda) also sang well: smooth and round tones without strain. Kathleen Fogarty's Adele was even better: she is a vivacious, lively performer with a clear voice that was comfortable in its highest range. Surprisingly, considering his performance here as Sparafuicla in Rigeletto last year, James Ramlet did a poor job as the prison warden Frank. His delivery seemed muddy and clumsy.

Stephen Sulich, conductor; Stage direction: Randel Hoey; sets by Seattle Opera; costumes from Toronto.
