Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

La Boheme
by Giacomo Puccini

Touring company from Milan, 23 February 1993
The Corn Exchange, Cambridge

(in English)

The last time I saw La Boheme was in New York with Domingo and Nello Santi conducting; perhaps that accounted for my dissatisfaction with this casual, lackluster performance.

I had high hopes that the company, billed as a kind of junior varsity from Milan, would be a lot better than the quality I saw here in Tosca. Not so. In fact, I left at the first interval, unwilling to listen to those georgeous songs sung by such mediocre singers.

I can't even find the program, and don't know who sang what. I don't suppose I am going to encounter any of them again, anyhow.
