Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

L'Elisir d'Amore (Elixir of Love)
by Gaetano Donizetti

Metroploitan Opera,
New York, Feb 1988

Compared with Kohvanshina, this seemed like icing and no cake. Light, silly. Does have "Una Furtiva Largrima," sung beautifully by Vinson Cole, the little tenor. And we saw Giuseppe Taddei, an aging Italian legend who had sung at the Met only once before this role as Dulcamara. He was lively and animated and his voice was more than adequate to the role despite his 71 years. Kathleen Battle sang Adina and Cole was Nemorino.
