Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote)
by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Anchorage Opera, Fourth Avenue Theater,
24 March 1988

Moments of sheer delight. Fun, lyrical, very Mozart. . Michael Rees Davis sang Tamino; Steven Aiken Papageno; Young-Ae Cho Pamina and Evelyn de la Rosa Queen of the Night. Aiken was by far the best actor and the crowd favorite. de la Rosa captivated with her version of the flashy solo. Cho was lyric and sang with beautiful tone and color, but seemed wooden and unconvincing on stage. We heard Davis here last year in Lucia di Lammermoor; his voice has matured and seems richer. His good looks and improving voice mark him a favorite.
