Idomeneo
by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Metropolitan Opera,
NY28 Feb 89
We saw this first of Mozart's operas on the second day of a three-operas-in-three-days run while I was in NY with BLH and WPD serving as a Pulitzer juror. Barb and I went w/out Pat, and left after the second act. It was all in all a dull and uninspiring evening.
The story was unconvincing (even in the context of opera) and the staging very dull. There was little movement on stage, simply singers stepping up to the fore and singing while the rest of the cast stood still behind them. The costumes didn;t fir the period or the set, adding to the distraction.
This was my first experience with the mezzo in a boy's role. I found it, like everything else in this production, a great distraction and unsatisfying. I will say that she (Susan Quittmeyer) had a fine voice and worked hard at the part.
Conductor: David Stivender; Production/set/costume: Jean-Pierre Ponnelle; Idamante: Quittmeyer; Electra: Kay Griffel (sub for Carol Vaness); Idomeneo: Siegfried Jerusalem.
I had been anticipating Jerusalem's performance, but found it disapppointing, too.
