Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

Khovanschina
by Modest Mussorgsky

Metropolitan Opera, New York,
Feb 1988 (opening night)

This was sung in Russian; brooding; long (five acts, four hours) and doleful. Three of four male leads were giants-looked 6' 5".This was our first opera at the Met. We had great seats in the orchestra section. The atmosphere enveloped us completely. We were slightly intimidated but soon recognized that most of the audience were there to hear and enjoy the opera and that we didn't really stand out as rubes from the north. Great fun.
