Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

Pagliacci
by Ruggiero Leoncavallo

Sacramento Opera

DATE?

Sacramento Opera's Pagliacci was my first, a quick and enjoyable evening of good acting and singing that satisfied. Quade Winter sang Canio in a strong and confident (though not pretty) voice. His passionate and convincing Vesti was the high point of the production. Adib Fazah's Tonio was also convincing, and Gail Dobish's Nedda was very serviceable; none of the secondary voices were memorable. The orchestra sounded fuller and more confident than at previous Sac Opera performances -- perhaps with the addition of players from the now defunct Sacramento Symphony. Monroe Kanouse conducted.
