Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

Romeo et Juliette
by Charles Gounod

Anchorage Opera Sept. 25, 1990
(Discovery Theater)

This was uninspiring as opera, but Erie Mills singing made the evening worthwhile, anyhow.

Miss Mills sang Juliette with great sweetness and purity, effortlessly encompassing the part. It was easy to see why she is singing all over the world now to increasing notice. She did this with rather little help from Romeo John Fowler, whom I found embarassingly wooden. He sang adequately but acted with such lethergy that we made a bet between acts whether he would ever move his arms. (I believe he did, once.) Karen Nickell, whom I liked so much here as Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus last season, sang Stephano well. Steven Aiken, another regular, did not inspire as Capulet, although as usual he was one of the best actors on stage-always vigorous and engagé. Local singer Michael Moore (Tybalt) sings everything the same, to my ear, but the way he sings is pretty good.

I like the Anchorage Opera chorus, and it was again good. The male singers especially seemed strong and well-rounded.

Others: Mercutio: James Busterud; Gertrude: Claire Wipperman; Verone: Dennis Rupp.

Conductor: Jonathan Dudley; Director: Joshua Major; Scenery: Michael Anania
