Field Notes of a Rookie Opera Lover

Salome
by Richard Strauss

San Francisco Opera
1 Feb 1997

Salome is not a favorite opera of mine, but Bernd Weikl and Karen Huffstodt are two singers who are rapidly growing in my estimation. Their stellar performances in this production showed why.

Weikl as John the Baptist (Jokanaan) was compelling: truly a haunted, prophetic figure on stage, a commanding presence with a rich, satisfying voice. Huffstodt has always pleased me, a rich voluptuous sound I find especially enticing. She sang with great control at all levels, an engrossing performance.

Ralf Weikert conducted.
